Welcome to Bloom & Grow, part 2. This time, it is all about the inspiration behind my desire to write a series of posts about the realities of infertility: New Roots Herbal’s “Generation” product and the person who came up with it, David Wilkes.
A little while ago, I was invited to visit the New Roots Herbal facilities and meet with David. It was lovely to put a face to the name I had heard so much about since meeting Neil Abbott at the Canadian Health Food Association back in May. It was very likely the most candid, friendly and actually fun conversation I have had about infertility and its struggles. Here’s a transcript of the “interview”:
Kate: Let’s start from the beginning; how did it all begin for you and your wife?
David: I met Emily while vacationing in Costa Rica back, fast forward five years and we’re married with our hearts set on starting a family. We discovered falling is love is easy, starting a family can be complicated.
Kate: In what way was it challenging for you both?
David: After several months into trying to start our family, we had not yet conceived, so Emily visited her gynaecologist for a check up. Thankfully, all was well with her. We thought, could it be me?
Kate: What was your next step?
David: I consulted a fertility physician and brought up plenty of suggestions to improve male fertility which included no cell phone in the front pocket and keeping the family jewels cool, no hot tubs, tight underwear and so on. I took these suggestions to heart along with getting a sperm sample analysis later revealed my sperm count and motility were on the low end of the spectrum.
Kate: So what else did your physician recommend?
David: He recommended several vitamins and minerals I should take, but I knew there was more I could do. So, I shared the list with our lead naturopath in product development, and he suggested several additional nutrients I should take.
Kate: I understand one in six couples in Canada experience infertility, a number which has doubled since the eighties. One of those 1 in 6 couples is Andrew and I, who have recently been looking at fertility treatments. You therefore decided to take matters into your own hands, right?
David: Exactly, I knew our experience was not uncommon, and I was in the unique position with plenty of resources within my grasp. Along with our product development team, we combined these nutrients into a convenient format men would actually take. The formula we call Generation was born, the first male fertility formula of its kind. Four months later we were expecting and we are now proud parents to Charlotte and her kid sister Willow.
Kate: I have heard that New Roots Herbal wants to make you the poster-boy for male fertility. Do you see yourself as such?
David: Well, not exactly, but the formula addresses the fact fertility takes two and men need to man-up and do their part. It is still an uncomfortable topic for men, and feel they will be perceived as less manly by admitting they also have things to take on board when it comes to fertility. It’s something I really hope will change as it’s more often than not half the battle.
Kate: What advice would you give to couples currently going through fertility treatments?
David: To keep trying, keep the hope and keep things fun. Staying positive makes a big difference. I also strongly advise people to put all chances on their side: limit alcohol and eat a healthy diet.
There you have it guys: a positive attitude combined with healthy living can make a very big difference, especially if you add “Generation” into it. There are no guarantees in life, but we might as well put all chances on our side, right?
