I have something really exciting planned for the blog, something very real. Not that the blog isn’t already real enough, but I decided to do a little series on infertility issues. What gave me this desire to be so candid with you all? Well, I met Neil Abbott from New Roots Herbal (click HERE to read more about them) back in May who introduced me to their wonderful products (there are hundreds of them). A few immediately caught my attention… Especially the one they call “Generation”, which is a very complete male fertility supplement. Why was I so interested in this product? Read below…
It’s fairly simple: Andrew and I have been going through fertility treatments. It’s not that I decided to hide it, it’s just that as a generally private person I rarely publicly talked about it. I did not realize how common it actually is and how beneficial for myself and others talking about it can be. So yes, just like 1 in 6 couples in Canada, conceiving is a challenge for us. After tests were done, confirming that everything is perfectly fine, our struggle was labelled as “unexplained infertility”. Last summer, we went through 4 IUI (intra-uterine insemination) treatments without success. You can imagine the physical and mental downfalls of going through such procedures only for it to fail. After our 4th one, we decided to take a break until the new year… We needed it. I felt like a failure and a pincushion. I kept thinking “maybe I shouldn’t have had that glass of wine” or “maybe that Tylenol is the reason it failed”… I was trying to control everything about my life: no bath (too hot), no headaches tablets, no Naproxen when my back relapsed (I have disk protrusions sometimes trapping nerves, so I went through a week of excruciating pain), simply to put all chances on our side. Each month, when receiving the call from the clinic telling me it was negative, I broke down. Andrew was nothing but supportive and went above and beyond, even though it was hard for him too. And, let’s face it, it is expensive!
However, when the new year arrived, I was diagnosed with mono, which put on hold any further treatments as I wanted my body to be as close to 100% before going through all the scans, daily injections, exams, supplements, etc.
When I met Neil, I was 3 months “in” my mono… Still not feeling great but feeling better. When “Generation” was brought up, along with the lovely happy ending story of its developer David, I got hopeful again. I knew then that Andrew and I would try this before going through further treatments. What more, I wanted to meet David and hear his story. The struggles he faced with his wife, the challenges, what led him to think about developing such an amazing male fertility product and, finally, the happy ending to his story: two beautiful daughters, Charlotte and Willow.
By doing this series of posts, I am hoping to encourage people to talk about it and simply let them know that they’re not alone in this. You can comment on here, privately reach out to me or simply read and feel supported.
The next post on this topic will be my interview/meeting with David, which was informative, interesting and very happy.
