Tofu really is a delicious and versatile food. The trick is to know how to prepare it and that’s something that comes with practice… Or by following a vegan food blog like mine. 😉 If you simply type “tofu” in the search bar of the blog, you will find quite a few delicious recipes, all tested and approved by vegans, vegetarians and omnivores!
Despite being misunderstood and often wrongly judged, tofu is a very good food to add to your diet. Like everything else, it needs to be consumed in moderation… And I recommend always buying organic. As well as being a good source of protein, tofu contains all nine essential amino acids. Let’s not forget that it’s also a good plant source of iron and calcium and the minerals manganese, selenium and phosphorous, and a good source of magnesium, copper, zinc and vitamin B1.
If you’re new to tofu and not sure which to choose, you can read my little guide HERE, in which I explain a lot of what you need to know.
Therefore, I thought it was time to share a new one with you! This Smoked n’ Spicy Tofu recipe could well be my simplest one yet, and is the perfect one for busy week nights.
Smoked n' Spicy Tofu
- 1 block extra-firm tofu cut into cubes
- 1 small red onion thinly sliced
- 3 tbsp vegetable oil I use grapeseed
- 6-8 drops liquid smoke more or less to taste
- 1 tbsp Sriracha can be adjusted to taste
- 1 tsp salted herbs the quantity can vary depending how salty your herbs are
- 2-3 tbsp nutritional yeast
Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat
Add onion and cook for 2-3 minutes
Add tofu and cook for 5 minutes. Stir often so the tofu cooks on all sides
Reduce heat to medium and add liquid smoke, Sriracha and salted herbs. Stir well and cook for a further 5 minutes, stirring regularly.
Add 1 tbsp of oil and the nutritional yeast, stir well until all coated and cook for 2 minutes.
Serve over rice, quinoa, salad... The possibilities are many!
